World Poetry Day 2024

World Poetry Day 2024

Every year on 21st March, World Poetry Day is celebrated worldwide to honour one of the most beautiful creations of the human mind- poetry. Poetry is a type of writing where words are written in a rhythmic manner which evokes many forms of emotions. This day promotes the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry worldwide. This day aims to celebrate poetry’s unique ability to capture the creative spirit of the human mind, inspire new ideas, evoke emotions, and promote cultural diversity.

21st March was declared as the World Poetry Day by the UNESCO in 1999. This day honours the great poets who created new worlds with their words. From the oldest known poem in the world, “Epic of Gilgamesh,” to the modern verses, poems have become an important part of human history.

This year, the theme of this day is ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’. This theme celebrates the legendary writers of the past, whose work paved the way for others to create poetry.

World Poetry Day is celebrated through cultural events which promote poetry writing, learning and recitation among people of all ages. It is a day when people celebrate poems while honouring the poetic masters, from Rabindranath Tagore to Emily Dickinson.
