World Soil Day

World Soil Day

Every year on December 5, we celebrate World Soil Day. This day highlights the important role soil plays in supporting life on Earth.

Good soil is necessary for growing the food we eat. It provides important nutrients to the fruits and vegetables we eat. Unfortunately, in recent decades, humans have harmed the quality of soil, causing a loss of organic matter and erosion.

The United Nations declared December 5 as World Soil Day in 2014 to remind us about protecting the soil.

This year’s theme is “Soil and Water: A Source of Life,” to raise awareness about the important connection between soil and water for healthy life on Earth.
