World Soil Day

World Soil Day

World Soil Day is observed annually on December 5. This day serves as a reminder of soil’s vital role in sustaining life on this planet.

Healthy soil is an important part of our lives. It provides us with the necessary nutrients for the growth of food items. Over the past couple of decades, industrialisation and poor soil land management have led to the degradation of soil quality, loss of organic matter and soil erosion.

World Soil Day was first celebrated in 2014 after the United Nations General Assembly announced December 5 as the official day for celebrating soil. This day encourages us to raise awareness about soil conservation.

This year’s World Soil Day theme is “Soil and Water: A Source of Life”.
