World Sparrow Day 2024

World Sparrow Day 2024

Every year, on 20th March, World Sparrow Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about the need to conserve and protect sparrows. This day highlights the significant role sparrows play in our environment. While once common, even in cities, their numbers have decreased in recent years. Their decrease in number reflects the downfall of our environment.

Sparrows play a vital role in the ecosystem. They help pollinate flowers by spreading seeds and control pest populations by consuming insects.

The Nature Forever Society, an Indian organization, initiated the idea of celebrating this day. It is an NGO founded by Mohammad Dilawar, who started his work by helping the house sparrows in Nasik. He was named “Heroes of the Environment” in 2008 by TIME Magazine for his efforts. The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010.

World Sparrow Day aims to alert people about the conditions of sparrows and other birds and urges them to take action to save nature. This day can be celebrated by learning more about sparrows and other birds, building birdhouses and educating people about the importance of sparrows in nature.
