World Toilet Day 2023

World Toilet Day 2023

On 19th November, we celebrate the World Toilet Day all around the world. The day highlights the importance of proper sanitation, good hygiene and clean water. The World Toilet Organization made World Toilet Day an official event in 2013.

The symbol of the World Toilet is the small but mighty hummingbird. There is an ancient story about a hummingbird putting out a large fire by carrying droplets of water in her beak. Although her actions were small, they helped fight a bigger cause. Therefore the hummingbird was selected as the symbol, as the world sanitisation crisis is vast, but every person can help in their way to solve it.

There are 3.5 Billion people in the world who do not have a proper toilet. Due to this many still practice ‘open defecation’ which spreads germs. This is a major health issue that ends up harming a large number of people, especially children and women from poor backgrounds.

The theme of the 2023 World Toilet Day is ‘Accelerating Change’ which urges people to take personal action to solve this health crisis. This day aims to provide every citizen with safe toilets and water by 2030. To celebrate this day, we can discuss the necessity of washrooms, clean water and proper hygiene with others to make people aware.
