World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023

World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023

Every year on 5th November, the World Tsunami Awareness Day is celebrated around the world. This day focuses on raising awareness about the dangerous effects of tsunamis and educating people on how to stay safe during a tsunami.

A tsunami is a series of huge waves created by an underwater disturbance usually such as earthquakes, or landslides occurring below or near the ocean. The idea to create a national day of tsunami awareness was first taken by Japan.

The United Nations declared 5th November as World Tsunami Awareness Day in December 2015. On this day events are held in various countries and people are encouraged to spread awareness on social media. Also, mock drills are organised where people are taught how to get to a safer place during a tsunami.

Even though a tsunami is a rare event, it is a major natural disaster that ends up affecting a huge portion of society. Mainly women, children, older people and people with disabilities are the ones who are affected the most during and after tsunamis. Therefore this year the theme of the day is ‘Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future’.
