MONUMENTS OF INDIA

A monument is any building or structure that is visited by people from around the world. They are built to remember people, or things that have happened. In this chapter, we will learn about six famous and important monuments in India. Good luck!

1. Gateway of India

This monument is located in Mumbai in Maharashtra. It was completed in 1924. Many people from around the world visit the Gateway of India every year. It lies next to the Arabian Sea. 

2. Red Fort

The Red Fort is located in Delhi. It is also known as the Lal Qila in Hindi. It is known for its red-coloured walls. Every year, on Independence Day (15th August), India’s flag is raised at the Red Fort. 

3. Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous monuments in the world. It is located in Agra in Uttar Pradesh. It is located next to the Yamuna river. It was built in the year 1653 by the Emperor Shah Jahan.

4. Victoria Memorial 

This monument is in the city of Kolkata in West Bengal. It was completed in 1921. It was built in memory of Queen Victoria. It is well-known for its beautiful, white walls.

5. Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is in the city of Amritsar in Punjab. It is a place of worship for our Sikh brothers and sisters. It is called the Golden Temple because of its golden colour. 

6. Charminar

The Charminar is located in the city of Hyderabad. The name charminar means ‘four towers’ in English. This monument is more than 400 years old!
